Our Daily Devotion for Tuesday, October 13th, 2020

43 But it is not so among you; but whoever wishes to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you must be slave of all. 45 For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.”    Mark 10:43-45   NRSV
 
In this reading from Mark’s Gospel, Jesus is telling His disciples that if they want to be leaders ( those who wish to become great) , they will need to be servants, and handle the needs of others. This statement comes after James and John ask Jesus for positions of power in His kingdom , and also after they learn that people of great wealth and power have a difficult time giving up that wealth to follow God – their material things mean too much to them. As we know, Jesus led a life on earth as a servant – serving others, not wanting to be served Himself.
 
Let us pray together please – Loving God, help us to understand that the better way is to serve and nurture others in The Truth, which is Jesus. We want to grow and learn more so we can be good followers, good Christians. Guide us to be more giving, more loving, more generous to others who long for kindness and caring in their lives. We pray all through Jesus, The Messiah.   Amen.
