6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is now before the Lord.”[a] 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him; for the Lord does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel. He said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” 11 Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him; for we will not sit down until he comes here.” 12 He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.1 Samuel 16:6-13

There are times, as this reading suggests, where a person is judged by appearance ; God knows each man by what really is important – there character, their souls. “Judging a book by its’ cover” as we say can lead to mistakes about someone. But God saying, as He did in v.12 “….for this is the one” when he saw David was the clinching statement for Samuel, and he listened to God’s instruction. And the ceremony was by no means an empty exercise – the spirit of the LORD came upon David from that time forward. Indeed there was no question – his election was from God !!

Let us pray together – Guiding and Ever Knowing God – as Samuel followed what you instructed, we want to have that faith, that belief , that as You instruct us, we should follow. Help us to be stronger, more faithful , more deeply rooted with You so that our faith will grow ever more. All this we ask in Jesus’ holy name.  Amen

Yours in Christ  ,  Rollie

1 Samuel 16:7

When I first read this verse, I thought of the old saying, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

This verse can remind us that we spend too much time and money on our outward appearance. We live in a world/culture that tells us just that over and over. That message is all around us daily.

What Samuel is saying is that God looks at us in a different way. He sees our hearts, our faith, and our character. We must spend at least as much time developing these attributes as we spend on our clothing, cars, etc. We know that this means using our Bibles more than we use Facebook.

Prayer: Gracious God I needed this reminder. Your words are the most important beauty product we all need. Amen
