19 This is John’s testimony when the Jewish leaders in Jerusalem sent priests and Levites to ask him, “Who are you?”20 John confessed (he didn’t deny but confessed), “I’m not the Christ.”21 They asked him, “Then who are you? Are you Elijah?” John said, “I’m not.”“Are you the prophet?” John answered, “No.”22 They asked, “Who are you? We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What do you say about yourself?”23 John replied,“I am a voice crying out in the wilderness, Make the Lord’s path straight, just as the prophet Isaiah said.”24 Those sent by the Pharisees 25 asked, “Why do you baptize if you aren’t the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the prophet?”26 John answered, “I baptize with water. Someone greater stands among you, whom you don’t recognize. 27 He comes after me, but I’m not worthy to untie his sandal straps.”
This reading is a major part of the discussion that John the Baptist had with the local religious leaders at the River Jordan. The Pharisees sent them to ascertain what John’s purpose was. The Baptist makes it abundantly clear in his witnessing that he was not Elijah re-born or any other prophet, nor was he The Promised One of God , The Anointed One (Jesus) , but rather that his mission was to make a way for Jesus’ coming. He stated that he was to “make the Lord’s path straight” , as was spoken by the prophet Isaiah.
Let us pray please – Giving Father, Loving God , we thank you for the abundance of blessings that You bring to us each day. We especially thank you for the great witness of John the Baptist, as he prepared the way for the coming of You Son Jesus into their world. As John bore great witness to that event, help us LORD to be the best witnesses here on earth that we can be for You and Your Son , telling the world of The Good news and salvation through Jesus, in whose name we pray. Amen.
Yours in Christ , Rollie
