“Jesus replied, “ Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for man did not reveal this to you, but it came from my Father in Heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and upon you I will build my church and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”                     Matthew 16:17-18

In our reading today from the Gospel of Matthew, we read that, after the disciples tell Him what others have said about Him, Jesus questioned them directly, asking “ who do You say I am?” (v. 15b). Peter responds to Him, saying “You are The Christ ( Hebrew Messiah, Greek Anointed One), Son of the Living God.”  (v. 16). No one on earth told Peter this ; quite the contrary, the teachers at the time told people the opposite. This knowledge had to come from God. Peter “got the message” that God imparted and he declared for all of them to hear.

Let us pray together :  God of our lives, we thank you speaking to our minds and to our hearts, as you did so faithfully to Peter and the others. Help us to be strong, dedicated disciples for Jesus, the Anointed One, to tell our troubled world that there is hope, there is caring , there is love for all in The good News.      In Jesus’ great name we pray.      Amen.

Yours in Christ ,    Rollie

Matthew 16: 13-20

20 then he ordered his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

I have always had difficulty understanding why Jesus did not want his disciples to tell people that he was the Messiah. I realize now, that Jesus wanted to make the announcement Himself that HE was the Messiah. He wanted to do it at the proper time in keeping with God’s plan. For Jesus it was not yet the proper time to make this announcement. Jesus will build His church, but he uses people as His building materials.

Dearest Jesus, let me help you. Give me the grace to know how to keep building your church. Help me to be strong when questioned about you. Keep me close so that I feel protected. Today’s world is scary and I don’t know if I would have the courage to defend you. Please have my back so that I feel supported in my faith. Amen.

Jesus asked the disciples this question first, “Who do people say the Son of Man is? But, He had another question He really wanted to ask them. The second question is the real curiosity Jesus had for His disciples.

“Who do You say I am?”

This question is the real question Jesus wanted to ask them. However, what Jesus wanted to know is each disciple’s confession about Him. This is truly important for an individual’s understanding of who Jesus is. Every single person lives each one’s life according to what they believe and no one else can’t help anyone else’s salvation. This is the key question and key answer because Jesus said to Peter that “I will build my church. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven” after hearing Peter’s confession.

“You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God”

Lord, thank you for giving me the right confession in me acknowledging who You are. Thank you for being my Savior, Lord, and King in my life. Help me to serve others to live with right understanding who You are with the right confession in You. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
