10 By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. 11 For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. 15 If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames. 1 Corinthians 3:10-15
In today’s reading, Paul points out that he has laid the “foundation” of the building in Corinth (i.e., the church) – that foundation being Jesus Christ. He is telling the citizens to take care in how they continue to build upon it. These people need to continue to put aside their secular ways and their squabbling amongst each other, and use God given ideals such as wisdom, truth and love for each other and to those who they come in contact with. This way, the building will be strong !
Let us pray please – Holy and Eternal God, as we continue this work of building that was started so long ago, help us to be good builders, as Paul exhorted the people back then. Guide us so that we can be strong, faithful witnesses in this troubled world. We want to be good teachers and preachers of Your Word to all who will listen. We pray all this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Yours in Christ , Rollie
