"Be a Good Citator like Jesus"

As I shared about oppositions in my life in the last Sunday sermon, I guess we fight internal and external opposition every day. Accepting opposition as a part of our life is hard, though, we can go through different types of oppositions with remembering what Jesus went through before us.

One reason that fighting with oppositions in our lives is because of our sinful nature. The Truth always has oppositions as Jesus faced them all His life-long. God wants us to win over those attacks, tests, and temptations in our lives. Therefore, holding the right Truth and having faith in God is important. Otherwise, we are so weak to fall down and fail. As we need to exercise every day for strengthening our basic muscles to do things by ourselves, we need to strengthen our spiritual muscles every day for our soul’s health and growth.

Finally, I started Home Workout that I learned from Maddox with my son, Daniel. Starting new things is always easier than keeping it as a part of my life, though. I plan to start it again every three days if I fail in three days. As I stay at home longer than I expected, I feel I get more loosening my daily life. I hope and pray that I can give more good news about my physical and spiritual health later.

These are the words of Jesus that won the temptation of Satan.

Satan: “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.” (Matthew 4:3)
Jesus: “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” (Matthew 4:4 & Deuteronomy 8:3)
Satan: “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands, they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” (Matthew 4:6)
Jesus: “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” (Matthew 4:7 & Deuteronomy 6:16)
Satan: “All these I will give you if you will fall down and worship me.” (Matthew 4:9)
Jesus: “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.’” (Matthew 4:10 & Deuteronomy 6:13-14)

Sunday Worship
March 29, 2020

Picture
Prelude
(When the prelude begins, please take your seats and begin to “Listen.”)

Invitation to Worship
I invite you to stand and turn to face the light as it comes into our midst.  It is this “turning” or “re-orienting” ourselves toward the Holy light that is the essence of our season of Lent.  Let us begin this season of listening, of hearing that still, small voice and finding our own true selves.

Introit / Meet Me Here

Reading / Liturgist
We often have a “cast of characters” living inside our heads that love to carry on endless conversations–each from their own perspective. The chatter of our minds can sometimes keep us from a deeper listening and it is often difficult to understand what is a mystical connection to God. Getting our True Self into the chairperson’s seat in the committee meeting does not mean ignoring those voices of fear, pessimism, people-pleasing or accusation, but instead listening intently to them and not letting them bully us into negative action. Letting them in and letting them go is the prayer of the mystic within.

Silent Rest
You are invited to sit quietly in the silence
without any expectation of what you “ought” to be thinking.
Don’t worry about sounds from the congregation or colds–simply
let them float into and out of your attention.
And if you find it difficult to settle your thoughts, contemplate the following:

Spend time alone, in reflection, on a regular basis
If you want to make friends with yourself.

Responsive Reading:
  • L: For that which, then I thought was right...
  • P: have mercy, God.
  • L: For that which, now, I regret...
  • P: forgive me, God.
  • L: For that which, hence, I know not what to do...
  • P: guide me, God.
  • All: Amen.

Opening Hymn / UMH #348 "Softly and Tenderly"

Seeking the Word / Luke 12:2-12
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God—what is good and acceptable and perfect. For by the grace given to me I say to everyone among you not to think of yourself more highly than you ought to think, but to think with sober judgment, each according to the measure of faith that God has assigned. For as in one body we have many members, and not all the members have the same function, so we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another. We have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; ministry, in ministering; the teacher, in teaching; the exhorter, in exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence; the compassionate, in cheerfulness. Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with mutual affection; outdo one another in showing honor. Do not lag in zeal, be ardent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer.

L: This is the Word of God for the people of God.
P: Thanks to be God.

Anthem / “Come to the Light"

Prayer Station - Lighting Candles
Today, again, we are lighting Candles. This time, however, we want you to think about people you might need to forgive and then light and forgive.  Forgiving is one of the first things Jesus did from the cross.  Let us follow his example, and rid ourselves of these hurts we seem to carry forever and be free of them.

Matthew 21:18-22 (NIV)
18 Early in the morning, as Jesus was on his way back to the city, he was hungry.
19 Seeing a fig tree by the road, he went up to it but found nothing on it except leaves. Then he said to it, "May you never bear fruit again!" Immediately the tree withered.
20 When the disciples saw this, they were amazed. "How did the fig tree wither so quickly?" they asked.
21 Jesus replied, "Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, 'Go, throw yourself into the sea,' and it will be done.
22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."

Today's scripture talks about Jesus' cursing on a tree.

After reading this scripture, these are the questions that came up in my mind.
  1. How come can Jesus curse a tree on not having a fruit?
  2. Is Jesus the one who cares about the fruits and results?
  3. Did Jesus get upset that there is no fruit because He was so hungry?

But, as I studied on the background of this scripture, the fruit Jesus was talking about is not the final fruit or ripe fruit of the tree, but it was something like nubs of fruit as evidence of its imminent crop.
  • In other words, Jesus was talking about what the tree is supposed to have in the Spring season. It was not necessary to be a full fruit or ripen fruit but something in the process that is going to ripen fruit in Fall.
  • Jesus was not talking about the fruit as a result but as a process.
  • In other words, Jesus was talking about faithfulness, not fruitfulness.

As we live in a capitalistic society, we encounter the issue of the results or possession, such as we might concern how rich he or she is or how much he or she possesses. Some people might think that the person who has a good result is better than the person who has a bad result. But, this is a totally secular perspective.

How does God's perspective differ from the secular one?
It is something like this. We measure our height from the ground. But, God's perspective is like measuring our height from the sky. For example, if you measure from the ground, Daniel is taller than me now. But if God measures our heights from the sky. I am taller than Daniel. Does it make sense?

Do you remember the illustration of the Kingdom of Heaven with the story of servants with different amounts of talents in Matthew 25?

The owner gave five talents, two talents, and one talent to his servants, depending on the servant's abilities. When he came back from his trip. he praised the servants who came with the profits of two talents and five talents with exact same words,

"Well Done, my good and faithful servant. You've been faithful in handling this small amount, so now I will give you many more responsibilities. Let's celebrate together!" (Matthew 25:21 & 23)

If the principle of the Kingdom of Heaven was based on Capitalism, the owner should have praised the servant who brought five talents more than the servant who brought two talents. But, this illustration of the Kingdom of Heaven shows God's perspective that focuses on faithfulness rather than fruitfulness.

Jesus was always concerned about faithfulness in many other situations in the Bible. As we have lived in a capitalistic society, we are used to seeing, think, and measure things from a capitalistic perspective. But, we, as the people of God, need to remember that we are the people who see, listen, think, and act based on Kingdom's perspective and virtues.

I hope and pray that we are able to look at our own perspective, standards, values if they are based on the Kingdom's perspective or secular or capitalistic perspective.

I wish all of you can share your own unique meditation with the companions in Christ so that all of us can be blessed by all of our unique insight and meditation.

Sunday Worship

Prayer as a spiritual practice may come easily for you and maybe it doesn’t. Even the most devout among us has doubts about prayer’s power at times. What is it? How does it work? This week we will consider
that the mechanics of what happens in prayer is not as important as that we do it. Because whether or not the outcome for ourselves or others is an actual healing, the very act of being entangled with God and with others through prayer has healing and power-bestowing benefits.

Silent Rest
You are invited to sit quietly in the silence
without any expectation of what you “ought” to be thinking.
Don’t worry about sounds from the congregation or colds–simply
let them float into and out of your attention.
And if you find it difficult to settle your thoughts, contemplate the following:

A wound is healed when a binding together happens.
A prayer for another binds us with them ad binds both of us to God...healing

What about simply letting things be for a minute
It is often the most needed ingredient for a breakthrough

Responsive Reading:
  • L: For that which, then I thought was right...
  • P: have mercy, God.
  • L: For that which, now, I regret...
  • P: forgive me, God.
  • L: For that which, hence, I know not what to do...
  • P: guide me, God.
  • All: Amen.

Opening Hymn / UMH #375 "There is a Balm in Gilead"

Seeking the Word / Mark 5:24-34
24 So Jesus went with him. A large crowd followed and pressed around him.
25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years.
26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse.
27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak,
28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.”
29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering.
30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?”
31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’”
32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it.
33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth.
34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.”

L: This is the Word of God for the people of God.
P: Thanks to be God.

Anthem / “How Wonderful His Love”

Prayer Station-Button Prayers
All you need is a button. Perhaps one on the clothes you are wearing, or one found in a drawer.

  1. Feel the hardness of the button and think about people who are going through hard times.  Ask God to help them.
  2. Buttons are used to fasten clothes together. Ask God to bring together people who have fallen out and moved apart from each other. Pray He will bring them peace.
  3. Look at your button and see how many holes it has. Think of that number of things you would like to thank God for.
  4. Look at the color of the button and say Thank You to God for something that color.
  5. Of course, we all have different buttons. Thank God for making everyone different and giving us all different gifts.
  6. AND don’t forget our GRATITUDE JAR. Try to write something every day.  This is very important during these very troubling times.

In the words of this song, ask God to:
   Meet me here
   Find me in my wanderings
   Meet me here
   Deep within my soul.

Prelude
Prepare your heart to worship God in the Spirit and the Truth.

Introit / "Come and Rest"

Reading / Liturgist
The Wisdom tradition within Christianity invites us to love knowledge, especially the self-knowledge that comes from examining ourselves in relationship to the liberating Word of God. As we have been practicing in our worship, Lectio divina (“divine reading”) is an ancient tradition of mixing the reading of scripture with prayer and meditation. Rather than an analytical approach to the words of scripture, it is a way for the words to simply be present and live in us. What will we hear when we let go of what it all is “supposed to” mean and simply let it reside within us?

Silent Rest
You are invited to sit quietly in the silence without any expectation of what you “ought” to be thinking. Don’t worry about sounds from the congregation or colds–simply let them float into and out of your attention.  And if you find it difficult to settle your thoughts, contemplate the following:

We spend too much time, solving, fixing, figuring out.
What about simply letting things be for a minute.
It is often the most needed ingredient for a breakthrough

Responsive Reading:

For that which, then I thought was right...
have mercy, God.
For that which, now, I regret...
forgive me, God.
For that which, hence, I know not what to do...
guide me, God.

Opening Hymn / UMH #600 Wonderful Words of Life

Seeking the Word / Proverbs 1:20-23

Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
on top of the wall she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:
“How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?
Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.
Amen

Title: Finding a Word: Listening to the Texts
Scripture: Proverbs 1:23
Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.

For the first Sunday, we shared the Word of God with the title: "Listen: Find Your Cave: Listening Spaces" with 1 King 19:11-12

After the earthquake came a fire,
but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

As Elijah listened to God's voice in a still small voice, even in the environments were full of mighty windstorm and earthquake, God wants us to calm and listen to His voice carefully beyond the loud, complicated, and noisy environments around us. Find your own private sacred listening place to listen to the voice of God as you prepare a special place for your meeting with your VIP.

For the second Sunday, we shared the Word of God with the title: "Listen: Find Your Breath: Listening to Our Bodies" with Romans 8: 26-30.

And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit,
because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

"Breath" in the Bible mostly means "Spirit of God." God breathed the breath of life into the nostrils of man and the man because a living person (Genesis 2:7). The Bible is the living Word because "all Scripture is God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16). Therefore, we need the help of the Spirit of God to understand the Word of God so that we can get the right message from God because the Spirit of God guides us in harmony with God's will (Romans 8:27).

For the third Sunday, although we couldn't gather in church together, I want to share the third message of our Lenten series, "Listen" here.

The theme of the third Sunday is "Listen: Finding a Word: Listening to the Texts."

The scripture is Proverbs 1:23.

Repent at my rebuke!
Then I will pour out my thoughts to you,
I will make known to you my teachings.

Who do you think is the wisest being in the world? Undoubtedly! God.
Which book is the wisest? It would be a book that has been published for the longest period because if it is not wise or helpful for the people, the publication must be suspended. Which book has the longest publication history? The Bible is the best seller and a steady seller in the world. Although this might be one aspect of the reasons why the Bible is the wisest book in the world, I would like to introduce the Bible in this aspect today.

Who is the wisest person? The person who remembers much true wisdom and lives it out to help and serve others to live a better life. In this sense, I would like to introduce the Word of God as the wisest book in the world, and God is the wisest being in the world. So, I would like to encourage all of you to listen to the wisest wisdom from His Word.

"As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:9 (NIV)

I hope and pray that all of us can find your own sacred place to encounter God, listen to the voice of God with the guidance of the Holy Spirit from the wisest book, the Word of God.

Closing Hymn / UMH #127 / Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah

Introduction to Lent 2020

Jesus’ Last Teachings by Margie Williamson

As Jesus led His disciples during His last week in Jerusalem, He taught them along the journey. And He continued teaching throughout the week. He taught through delivering prophecy, through allowing people to see His emotions on display, through His actions that took on the role of living parables, through His responses to conflict and criticism, and through the way he completed His mission on earth. His audiences varied, and included His disciples and His followers, the crowds in Jerusalem, the religious leaders, the merchants in the Temple court, the political powers in Judah, and even the Roman soldiers. Everyone who encountered Jesus during this week had the opportunity to see or hear Him teach.

Studying Jesus’ teachings during this final week is like taking a master’s course in teaching methodology, in understanding the audience, in passionately converting the content, and of living out, fully committed, what is taught. Jesus taught from His authority as the Son of God and out of His deep love and compassion for mankind. Jesus passionately wanted to bring all people back to God, and He agonized when some of His audience rejected His message. Even facing the humiliation and pain of the cross did not change His message.

Jesus provides us with the opportunity to see the supreme Teacher in action. Not only can we be changed during the process, but we might even become passionate about how we, too, teach with our words, actions, and lives.

Jesus’ last week of often referred to as the Passion Week. That title captures the energy of the week, the emotional ups and downs of dealing with people who didn’t get who God is and what Jesus was sent to do, the pain and sorrow experienced on the cross, and the joy of His resurrection.
