Days to Pentecost 05 - According to the Scripture on April 17, 2020
by Hannah Lee

"And [so] we have the prophetic word [made] more sure, to which you do well to pay attention
as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.” (2Peter 1:19)

"For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,
that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,” (1Corinthians 15:3-4)

Paul emphasizes that Jesus died and resurrected according to the Scriptures.
“According to the Scriptures”

What the Scriptures meant to those who read Paul’s letter, so that Paul had to emphasize ‘according to the Scriptures’?

Then, Old Testament was their Bible.
They believed that the Old Testament books is inspired by God.
They believed that the Old Testament is God’s word that was written in their history through many prophets over time.
Most of the Word were prophecies and promises about the future.
Prophecy is meaningful when it is confirmed that it will be done in the future.
We cannot see beyond our noses, so we tend to believe that a god is alive or a god is a real god when a prophecy comes true in the future.
Right now, Paul and Jesus’ disciples stood at the point when the prophecies, which had been consistently spoken by countless prophets for a long time, were fulfilled.
These people are risking their own lives to spread this news that Jesus came, resurrected, and saved them, according to the prophecies and promises they have been heard, learned, and known from their ancestors.
The problem is that people who are not familiar with the Scriptures.
The truth that Jesus, who came and raised according to the Scriptures, has little meaning to the people who don’t know about what the Bible says.
There is no greater evidence than this for those who are familiar with the Bible.
No matter how long time has passed, no matter how many people have said, if the prophecy is consistent, even if the prophecy and promises are fulfilled, it is because it is only one God’s thought and plan.
I don’t know the Bible as well as the Jews, but as the day dawns after dark, I believe that there is a day when I meet the Lord, who rises like a morning star, if I walk on a dark path with the Word as my lamp. "And [so] we have the prophetic word [made] more sure, to which you do well to pay attention
as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star arises in your hearts.” (2Peter 1:19)

I remember the incident in which the resurrected Jesus met two disciples on the way to Emmaus and taught them the Bible on the street.

“He said to them, “How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?” And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.” (Luke 24:25-27)

Knowing the Bible in detail is the key to wisdom leading to faith and salvation.

“and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.” (2Timothy 3:15)
